For sale is my 2002 Trooper. This is an automatic transmission vehicle without the Isuzu TOD system. This is either the perfect vehicle for somebody who wants a truck with one trip to the mechanic (or a DIY project), or needs some donor parts for their Trooper.

Mileage: Technically, this is a “true mileage unknown” vehicle. The odometer readout in the instrument cluster has many of the pixels not functioning, so it is difficult to read the exact mileage. However, periodically when it rolls through certain digits, you can read them all out. Currently, the mileage is 276,XXX miles, but I do not know what the XXX is because it cannot be read accurately. You can see in the photo album what I’m referring to.

Mechanicals: Mechanically, this truck is in remarkable conditions, with one exception. When I bought it, I was astounded at how clean the engine was. I don’t know if it got a new engine at some point, or the previous owner just did an incredibly aggressive top-end refresh right before selling it, but it looks and runs like it’s darn-near brand new. Starts immediately, idles perfectly, runs strong, doesn’t burn oil or coolant. It’s a happy motor.

However, the transmission is a problem. This problem also triggers the check-engine light. If you read up on these trucks, you know that these 4L30E units need periodic rebuilds every 100,000 miles or so. This one needed a rebuild when I bought it. I DIY-ed the rebuild, but apparently didn’t do a very good job, because after a summer of driving it gave out on me again. Currently, the vehicle can be moved in 1st or 2nd gear, but as soon as it tries to upshift to 3rd it seems to drop into neutral. Like, the 2-3 upshift just functionally yields a 2-N. So, you can move it around, move it on a trailer, and drive it up to about 30mph on the street with the gear selector in the “2” position. Additionally, it does not have a reverse, for seemingly the same reason (gave out at exactly the same time). One of the clutch packs just isn’t engaging. So, it needs either a transmission rebuild or a replacement transmission. That’s a doable job at any regular shop, and is a doable DIY job for somebody with a lift, a transmission jack, and 20-50 hours of free time depending on skill, experience, and luck. I have 3 other project cars that demand my attention and do not have the energy to give to a vehicle that I don’t have any long-term plans for.

My discussion here on Planet Isuzoo trying to diagnose this issue is available here, so you can get a more comprehensive description of the issue: https://www.planetisuzoo.com/posts/5588098/

Exterior: Overall condition of this truck is fair, with some areas of rust/corrosion commensurate with its age and usage. Most body panels are in good shape, with some pitting on the leading edge of the hood. The underside of the vehicle shows a fair amount of general surface corrosion/rust, but nothing “cancerous” or structural. The worst areas are the brackets connecting the frame to the front and rear bumpers, but that most aggressive rust does not extend to the frame itself.

Interior: The interior is in good condition, but certainly shows its age. Everything is clean, there are no gnarly stains on the seats or other touch-points. The drivers-side floorwell area has some staining due to water sitting when the windshield gasket was leaking at some point. The trunk area mat has a melted spot in it because the last 2 feet of the exhaust had rusted through and broken, so the pipe was aiming up directly at the underside of the floor. The exhaust has since been repaired.

Please reach out with any questions! I'd love to get this thing off to a new home, either as a parts car for somebody who needs it or as an easy-enough truck to get back on the road.
