I got mine replaced by a shop last year because it was going to be a b*tch to do on the sidewalk. For the 4wds the exhaust and frame rails are in the way if I remember correctly. You basically have 4 options. 1. Drop the exhaust 2. Jack up the engine 3. Unbolt the starter, disassemble it between the frame rails, take it out, then repeat to get the new starter in 4. If you have a body lift, you should be able to just unbolt and pull it out.
If the P.O was playing around with wires under the hood they may have hooked up something poorly and it fell loose, I know I'm guilty of that on my own rig. I'd start by looking at the electrical hookups.
