The Bradenton LKQ put a pickup with the carbed 2.3 in the yard on 4/21. If it hasn't been picked over yet, that is your best option. You'll need carb and intake, distributor and all distributor brackets. You will also need a low pressure electric fuel pump or serious pressure regulator. Dennis

Don't know if you got the carb stuff you needed, but the factory fuel injection system is very simple and reliable once you give it a much needed once over. I have troopers with almost 300k on them both running fuel injection have never had an issue with either.

It's going to be a weekend warrior for the most part, but I'm open to suggestions. You say a give it a once over? What do you have in mind?

Just make sure all the connections on the fuel injection harness are clean and there is no rub through on the wiring replace the fuel pressure regulator, go under and make sure fuel lines are good and not dry rotted. Inspect and replaxe any dry rotted vaccuum lines. You can search on YouTube and there are a couple of videos to simplify all the stuff that's on the intake manifold. If you want to take it a step further have the injectors sent out to be cleaned and rebuilt and install a new fuel pump. The majority of issues I've seen as far as the itec fuel system is lack of maintence. A fuel pump that is 30+ years old WILL fail same goes for injectors and rubber fuel hose, that is across all models and all makes. If you are doing the repairs yourself the most you will spend is MAYBE 200 bucks in parts probably less.

Thanks for the advise. I have been watching videos from j5 on the tube. I'll do some cost comparison to see which way makes more sense.

My dad was in the area of the unit that DSUZU found and he pulled the parts off today. So at this point I have options. Only thing I'll have to source is the water neck.

He did mention something about a hole in the bottom of the manifold that was connected to a pipe. I think that's EGR stuff and it will need to be blocked off.

Now I don't have to stress about finding parts. Just make a decision on which route to go.

My Amigo does not have a Catalytic converter on it. It was removed by the previous owner. I have a high idle, spit and sputters intermittently, sometimes it sounds like it drops a cylinder. It's got a check engine light on and the O2 light pops on. For kicks I pulled one of the hoses for the smog pump off and it changes nothing. I'm gonna throw a set of plugs and wires on it this weekend to see if it cleans up a bit. Does anyone know if the caps and rotors are the same between the original and the one pictured. I'll Probably tinker with some vacuum lines and a can of starting fluid to track vacuum leaks if any.

Anyone have suggestions for the ltems I listed let me know I would appreciate it. Thanks everyone for your help so far.

You can get the water neck at parts geek 86-87 trooper 2.3 for $20 go ahead and get new thermostat, and a coil for this year also and it will be plug and play for what you’ve pulled. As long as your not in a strict emissions county, pull all emissions, smog, egr and clean it up. Save yourself some time and spring for the Weber carb. Make block off plates, I have zero regrets on my swap….

Also not sure how the amigo throttle linkage is, but if your dad can source the 2.3 throttle linkage cable it’s easier to hook up,

Personally, I would go with the carb conversion. I've had plenty of Isuzus. To me, the ITEC was a pain in the rear, and I was never happy with it, or the lousy gas mileage. I would opt for a Weber 32/36 carb and adapter. I had this on my 1987 Trooper (2.3 originally carbed), and got the best mileage and performance. My build thread shows a lot of the work and modifications I made on my pickup. If I had gone with the carb conversion, I would still have the pickup today. Some of the "5TEC" modifications are okay, some of it is unnecessary. Can't tell if your dad got both distributor brackets from that picture, but if he didn't, the EFI plate might could be modified. Again I think the lousy fuel mileage and headaches you might have had were just from lack of maintence of the engine and fuel system. Not speaking on you specifically, but a lot of the engines now are pushing 200k plus miles with possibly 2 or 3 replacement head gaskets. Any engine with that high of mileage has blow by, oil consumption and lack of power. Just because these engines can last 300k before needing a full rebuild does not mean it will operate the same as an ngine that only has 20k miles on it with all new bearings/seals/rings etc. My first trooper had very poor fuel mileage, factory itec 280k on the clock. The second one, I opted for a full rebuild and a jerry cam and new fuel pump and injectors. I drove it from Georgia to Albany new york and averaged about 16 mpg on 31 inch AT tires. I'd say that's not bad fuel mileage at all on a 4400lb truck.

Depending on speed, 16 MPG is BAD gas mileage for a 4 cylinder engine. I was getting 15-16 in town on my Spacecab pickup which weighed considerably less than a Trooper. I got 21 MPG on my carbed, 2.3 1987 Trooper. This was non interstate state roads at 55 MPH (which is what most Isuzus were designed for). There is no reason a carbed 2.3 in an Amigo or a pickup shouldn't get better than 20 MPG. EFI systems were designed for EMISSIONS, not economy. Dennis
