I have an 1986 Trooper II with the stock 2.3 gas engine, 186,000 miles, Burns/leaks some oil. I use it for towing trailers on the road and work around the farm. When towing a load here in the hills of Tennessee, I find myself rowing through the gears, going real slow uphills. I have been considering putting a diesel into the Trooper, will this give me more power for pulling loads up the hill? I have an 81 LUV/PUP with the stock naturally aspirated diesel and Jerry LeMond sold me the parts I need to do the swap. The PUP has fairly low miles, and seemed to pull strong when I drove it. Thanks, Doug

OK, I'm working on answering my own question- Wikipedia says-"Isuzu C223 diesel engine making 58 horsepower (43 kW) at 4,300-rpm and 93 pound-feet (126 N·m) at 2,200-rpm.

Trooper- 112 PS (82 kW; 110 hp) 2.3-liter engine" But what is the torque on the gas motor?

the non turbo diesels have 58 to 62 hp and 95 in torque, over the years 81 to 87

the turbos have about 80hp. and 125 torque, sold 86\87

max torque is 2,200 for all the 2.2L diesels.
max hp is 4,300ish for all diesels.

the 2.3L is around 100hp or so.
the gas will out sprint the diesel, yes buy a long shot.........it will get there faster.

but there's no way it can touch me pulling 5,500LBs and getting 17 mpg or better though the rockys.
with that sorta load a 6% grade is 2nd gear at 20\25 mph.
i wouldent want that sorta load with out the turbo, id be stuck in 1st gear or worse yet mabe using low range on a high-way

I agree on the turbo diesel being better for pulling.......but holy cow! 5500 pounds? I have a 1500HD pickup for towing! My Troop only pulls a 5x8 utility trailer with a riding lawn mower on it occasionally.

I'd love to get my hands on one of the turbo diesels and get that mileage, but my leaky wore out lil 2.3 still drags me where ever I need to go, at speeds up to 75-80, and gets 19-21 mpg, so I'm happy with the 800 bucks I paid for it.
