1998 Trooper 4x4 manual - engine may be shot.. fix or sell?

529 Views 9 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  namealreadyinuse
My son has a 98 Trooper, 88,000 miles, always in Texas, very solid body, manual drive, 3.5 engine. Bought from a friend who bought it new.

Started making some nasty engine noise, took heads off, valves all appear ok, but #3 cylinder has no compression.

He likes his Trooper quite a bit, but not sure I will have time to resurrect it.

so.... what is it worth, roughly, as is? Looks like a qualified total engine rebuild may be $ 4-5 K.

Anyone know of a good source for doing this ? Or is anyone looking for a good project. Have a vehicle for him in the meantime, but need some good advice and have been greatly impressed with this forum. Read it a lot, but don't post before this. Will try to attach a pic, thanks for any help or input.

Just finished our custom rack.

With the manual, it is probably worth around 2k to 2.5k even with the blown motor. Considering the mileage and that is has a manual, it is certainly worth fixing. Ask @Shawn Anthony what a rebuilt motor for it would cost. If you want to sell it, let me know and I'd just build a motor for it and drive

Looks great. Low miles! Too bad it’s far away! I’d buy this and do engine swap, I like the isuzu 4JJ1 engines.
If it's a manual it's worth saving, in my opinion.

Because it is a 97 manual transmission trooper fixing it or selling it in non-op condition are both good opinions. In running condition, they are obviously worth more. However in non-running condition the are valued at more than scrap value.

The question is can you or do you have time to fix it?
If you do decide to fix it I can supply a re-manufactured engine with a warranty.

Looks like I need to talk to Shawn and learn more. May be a haul to get it to him, but I want someone who knows the Troopers to do it. Sounds like there may be an upgrade engine or so to look at. Anyone have thoughts on this?

Would love a ballpark guestimate.... need to sell this idea to the wife.

My son is in college and would love to keep his Trooper - he has my old truck now so I would have some time. He laughs at his friends who don't know how to drive a manual.... He calls it his anti-theft device.

Any other thoughts? Best way to get in touch with Shawn?

Thanks for your thoughtful insights and advice.
There isn't a drop in motor that is better without a significant amount of custom work, just FYI. If your son just needs a daily driver, you could get him into something else for the same price as a rebuild, but it'll still be a used vehicle with all the other maintenance items that go along with it. We here like our Isuzu's because they are increasingly unique; however, we also realize that if we're going to customize anything, we're on our own because there isn't much aftermarket support.

88,000 seems really low to have a blown motor, but you're in the year range that burns oil, so if it's a daily driver and he hasn't been checking the oil every day, that's probably what happened.
Fix it
Definitely worth fixing, if he likes the Trooper. Sounds like he has skills to do that as he has already pulled the heads.
Maybe jut a valve in head problem for the lack of compression.

Even a 3k price seems high to me. Are the parts like rings, bearings, maybe a piston that much?

He should DIY the entire job. Take it to a machine shop only if needed for cylinder repair.
I have 217,000 miles on my 4x4 96 Trooper with 3.2L and auto trans. Engine in great condition, does not burn oil. Only issue is it has the lifter tick noise. It shifts fine too.

One thing also helps engine trans and overall driving experience, I have slightly smaller tires, I use 235 70 R16, not 245's. That means more power to the wheels, less stress on the drive train.
Height diff between those tires is about 1/2". That tire size has been on there many years.
