So chances are everyone else figured this out about a decade ago and I'm the last person to have this problem. But just in case there's someone else out there in 2017+, let me help you... I just spent two hours trying figuring this out!
So I primarily was trying to follow Tad's instructions here http://forum.planetisuzoo.com/viewtopic.php?t=1929 with no luck.
I read on other websites about removing the panel under steering column for access... What panel are they talking about?? How do you get the Panel off??
First I thought that this was the remote entry box as it was next to the steering shaft and was roughly the right size.
No button on it. Thought that maybe it was aftermarket or an early 98 style entry system so I tried the 98 - 01 instructions for a long time. :banghead:
Even tried unplugging and plugging it back in  Ooops... I don't even know what this box is for... Anyone know? Did I mess anything up?
Anyway, after much more internet research and trying every combination of key turns/door openings/button presses, I crawled under there again and just by chance spotted the CORRECT BOX mounted up high against the left dash wall.
As you can see there are no white papers or yellow buttons, it is a GREEN BUTTON. It's a pain in the neck to access since I couldn't figure out how to remove any panels. Used a long twig.
I originally turned the key to on, depressed the green button with said useful twig and pressed the lock (indented) button on my remote. This successfully programmed the remote to unlock the doors, but not lock them :|
After messing around a bit I tried performing the same procedure with the door "closed" (just inserted a another chunk of repurposed organic matter into the door switch) and viola! It works!
They were no beeps, horn honks or anything like that.
So to recap:
Close door switch
With key to OFF press and hold green button
Turn key to ON
Press top button on remote
Release green button and test for function
You may have to play with the timing of the steps, I think I did it all in quick succession.
Now according to my original 97 key fob manual the top button locks-->unlocks_driver_door-->unlocks_all_doors in that sequence. The bottom button is reserved (useless) for future applications. I don't know if it always worked this way, but on my remote either button works to lock or unlock the doors. I would have preferred if the top locked and bottom unlocked, but hey, I've got a working remote on a 1997! How cool is that!
The correct key fob for the 1997...
Hope this helps at least one other 97 Trooper owner in this century...
