Turn 60 on Tues, 9/11 ( hell of day for a birthday). Didn't think it would phase me, but I'm thinking about that number and I'm not crazy about it.

You're just a young whippersnapper, I already got two years on ya!

Anyway, consider the alternative, it's not too attractive! I was recently diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes, had to drastically alter my diet, have lost over 20 lbs over the summer. I do feel better and got motivated enough to go work on the Trooper and get it ready for winter. Sanded & painted the rusty aircleaner (looks good now!), buffed out the oxidized paint (now gotta finish waxing the Jillion Square Feet), sanded & painted the rusty wiper arms, man it looks so much better now. Slimed a leaky tire, aired 'er all up, went and got some good gas (non-alcohol) and poured in 8 oz of Sta-Bil to keep it fresh. Forgot how well it drives, especially with the 3.4! I've had it 18 years and guess I'll keep it a while longer!!

So you might consider a lifestyle change and become reinvigorated. I'm just starting my arc and I expect to see more improvement down the road. A big thing is keeping busy and having a number of hobbies (like ZuZu's) to keep the body & mind entertained.

Anyway, Congrats on your impending milestone, it Most Certainly is quite a day to have a birthday, eh? Celebrate the freedoms we still have, I reckon. We may not be perfect but we're still the best country on Earth!

Thanks old timer. I'm pretty lucky - still exercise every day and have been on the organic squirrel diet - nuts and f&%king twigs - for a few years; told my wife to sell the mower, I'll just eat the lawn. Makes a difference, though.

Have tried to retire a couple of times, just can't do it - taught high school as first "retirement" job; kids were great, administration useless - I lasted 3 years. Now I run a valet parking company - keeps me on my toes, as managing college kids worse than herding giraffes on a tricycle. Keeps me going, though.

Guess it's natural to get antsy about the dreaded 60 - was just thinking how fast life goes by; 3 20 year increments - sobering.

Regarding the freedoms we enjoy - it would be great if everyone could travel the world and see how easy we have it here. When I start getting whiny about stupid crap I try to remember some of the sh&tholes I've seen - I really don't have any problems. :drunken: :albino:

Yep, I really can identify with your post. Like I can say, been there. I retired at age 61 in 1996. Now I've been retired for 25% of my life, and I didn't really feel old till my late 70's. I don't do the hard things on my Zu anymore. Just enjoy driving it. Your right on about our country, and our young people have a lot to learn about it, but they already know it all. I was probably like them when I was there age. At any rate, happy birthday, and many more.

Congrats, 62 now myself. Nice thing is after 59, certain retirement options start to cut in, more at 62. Be thankful for your health. And remember: 50 is the new 40, 60 is the new 50, 70 is the new 60, but at 90, you're right back to 2, diaper and all :D. A friend (also 62) says "If 60 is the new 50, then 9:00 PM is the new Midnight" :D :D Dennis

Hahaha - 9 is the new midnight - that is the bloody truth.

As long as I can keep exercising and remember my name, I guess I'm good to go. Told my wife if I get to walking around drooling and talking to the birdbath, she should sneak up behind me and whack me upside the head with a shovel, bury me under the banana trees - revenge on those fast growing, new plant sprouting, take over the flower bed sons of b$itches. :D

We told our kids (20 and 27). "Don't let us get old and senile. Wait until we are asleep and set off several bug foggers. They'll think we killed ourselves trying to kill bugs". For right now, the bottoms of the foggers say "the kids did it" :D Dennis

LOL!!!!

man, I'm 66...next year I'll be 67...as I head towards the big 7-0........still giving young people GRIEF......as they think they KNOW everything..

still tooling around and working on my '91 Trooper...and '87 Fiero GT..

old age ain't for sissies......but I'm still glad to be around...heck, any day ABOVE ground, is a GOOD ONE !

close to 2 yrs ago, I was badly over weight. crummy diet...working 6 days a week....plus fooling around with typical house chores, and working on the Trooper, etc..

I had two heart attacks....I had to lose weight. Went on a low CARB ZERO SUGAR DIET. man, quitting sugar was tough..like quitting heroin.....lol
within 9 months, lost 60 pounds...RETIRED from my job. watch what I put into my mouth.....walked everyday....rode my mt. bike on week ends...

big difference in quality of life....yeah, I still have the usual aches and pains of getting older......and loving the advil.....heh heh heh..

point is, you can reverse certain conditions in your life.....I have....and am better for it....

9-11 so sorry bud. that's a tough break.

Well, I hope you are getting some kicks out of the "go-kart" ! hahahaha ( I've been driving a WRX for 11-years ) _ _ _ my "go-kart".
I did a 165k mile tear-down on it in April, one-year after retirement. When in my 20's i tore-down a few VW transaxles and figured the Subaru is the same, as they split right-down the middle. ( instead of what the passport has ). I had a grumble in the transaxle which resembled a Carrier-bearing going bad. The transmission looked good so put it back together. The mech at the Subaru shop said to replace the Viscious-Coupler, which is a $780 component, and non-servicable. It cured the Grumble !

At age 67 now, when things get bad, i will ask the wife to go get some of those Bug-Foggers ! hahahaha
In the mean-time i will hope to get into the 'work-mode' and then dive into my '46 Willys CJ2A puzzle that i bought a year-ago next month. I haven't yet had the good fortune to drive it yet.
I thought when we retired that we could begin to "dumb-down."

The 60's are definitely a challenge as we must accept the fact that we are "out-dated" and no longer 'supported' so we are Patched for longevity like an old Inner-Tube.

Dennis, didn't see this till now. Great outlook, cause humor is the best thing going for us as we age. I'm 82, and make jokes about my neck hurting all the time. Doc says I'm to old to operate, so what's left except to look at it positively, it comes with the territory. "Despite the high cost of living, It remains popular" Happy Thanksgiving to all.

I like old and smart way better than young and dumb. I'm surprised I've made it this far with everything still working. One thing for sure is I don't think 35 is old like I used to. LOL
