Thinking about a purchase (edited: it made it, pics 6/20)

Postby The Bear Jew » Thu Jun 15, 2017 6:28 pm

There is an 88 Trooper in my area that came up for sale for $800. I spoke with the guy today and he said that the head gasket is blown and the A/C doesn't work.(which I am equipped to replace in my garage). Other than that he said the truck is mechanically solid. The body looks ok for the age in the pictures and the interior is better than a lot of them I have seen. I figure worst case scenario I need to get a head for it and the auto parts store near my house can get them for $450. He also to told me that despite the head gasket being blown it runs fairly smoothly and they didn't allow it to overheat. The diagnosis of the head gasket came from the exhaust smoke initially then checking the dipstick and seeing that their was water in the oil.

What I am wondering is, is there any tips or tricks for me when I go see this thing hopefully this weekend? Is there anything that you would make you scream deal breaker?

Thank you very much for your help in this and I will update when I check it out! *Fingers Crossed*

EDIT: he also stated that he had just replaced the fuel pump when the head gasket went out.

Frame rust is the only real deal breaker for me. Having fixed and reinforced a bad one, it is an ongoing effort to control the rust. Fixed is a misnomer, it isn't really fixed, I am just prolonging the inevitable for as long as I possibly can. Who knows how long but I think the POR 15 and Eastwoods folks love having me as a customer. Look for rust rear wheels back, rockers, and lower parts of door panels. You are in SC so you aren't in a salty roads state so a truck that has lived down there for most of its life should be better than what you would see if you started looking north a few hours. Good luck finding the one you want, and 800 bucks sounds fair for what he is asking for this one. Also, thumbs up on looking to bring another first gen back to life!

One caution on water in the oil - it won't take long to wipe out the bearings. If it was driven that way for any length of time you could have some damage in the bottom end.

Thanks for the responses so far, I will definitely take those into consideration. Unfortunately they are going camping this weekend and I won't be able to go see the Trooper until Tuesday. But in the mean time if there is anything else, please let me know!

If you can, check the crankshaft end play (just push / pull on the pulley, maybe with a medium screwdriver. If it has say 1/8" endplay, the thrust bearings have failed and the block will most likely be shot. I say this because used engines are getting more difficult to find. Dennis

Im here and i pretty sure im gonna buy it, just trying to figure out how to get it back to my house. 0 to almost 0 rust. Very liitle if any endplay on the crank pulley. There is no and an after market lock cylinder is wired in so ill have to solve that. It smokes like a chimney after a few min idling but it looks like headgasket like was mentioned in the ad so not to worried. Still runs pretty strong tbh.clutch feels good as does the tranny in all gears.

I can post pictures but i cant figure out how to get them to be smaller than 4mb. When i get home ill try it on a computer.

So, story time, the owners said they would tow the truck back to my house. about 20 min from their house the dolly tire blew out. so the truck is sitting at his cousins house until hopefully tomorrow when I can get a uhaul and a dolly to get it back. got to love it when a good plan comes together.... but hopefully tomorrow will be the day :|

1 last pic for now, also how would you guys suggest pulling this thing with a dolly. I did it with tranny and t-case in neutral, is this correct?

There is no neutral in the t-case, unless you disconnect the rear drive shaft the mainshaft of the tranny will spin throughout the tow.
If the tranny has sealed bearings on the mainshaft no problems, if non-sealed bearings they can fail since they lube by splash via the gears turning- which they aren't when in neutral. Since you don't know what type bearings are in the tranny be safe & disconnect the driveshaft at the pinion yoke & secure the loose end.

O ok, I was under the impression that the t case not being in gear was "neutral" I was mistaken. I will disconnect the driveshaft if at all possible, any idea what tools ill need. I have a bunch of tools just don't want to not the bring the one thing I need lol.

I'd probably just put the rear tires on the dolly, but I'm no dolly-tow expert. I'd pony up another 25 bucks for a trailer more than likely ;)

Thanks! Haven't been this excited about a project since i built my mustang a few years ago. Cant wait to dig into this thing and see how its put together. First thing is a solid cleaning tomorrow, then undoing alot of not so great workmanship and a new headgasket/timing set while im in there.
